Abstract Text:
Understanding the effects of energetic particles (such as fusion alphas) and thermal electron and ion kinetics on the macroscopic stability and transport of magnetized fusion plasmas is essential to making progress in magnetic fusion energy. In order to better understand these effects, continuum solutions to the drift kinetic equations (DKEs) for thermal electrons and ions, and energetic particles have been implemented in the NIMROD code. Recently, first-order, finite-Larmor-radius corrections involving the time-derivative of the magnetic moment have been added to NIMROD's continuum DKE solutions. Linear corrections are proportional to the equilibrium parallel current. The effect of these corrections on linear growth rates for ideal kink modes, which are relevant to the appearance of giant sawteeth in DIII-D shot #96043, will be discussed.
