The first Sherwood Fusion Theory Conference was unclassified and entitled "Conference on the Theoretical Aspects of Controlled Fusion Research". It was held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee in early 1959 and Oak Ridge National Lab was the host. There were only about thirty attendees at this first conference. Gatlinburg then was a tiny little town. The conference was held in a hotel, which was hard pressed to find a slide projector. When they did eventually find one it projected the old-fashioned two and a half inch square glass slides, and the organizers had to find an adapter for 35mm slides.
